REDDAM HOUSE BERKSHIRE SHORTLISTED FOR TES INDEPENDENT SCHOOL AWARDS 2018
08 November 2017
We are proud to announce that Reddam House Berkshire’s innovative Challenge and Extension Policy (CHEX) has seen the school shortlisted for the prestigious TES Independent School Awards 2018 in the category of ‘Strategic Educational Initiatives.’
Launched in January 2016, Reddam House Berkshire’s CHEX system is applied in all areas of the school and for all ages, from babies through to the 19-year old adult learners. This daring policy is underscored by the belief that all pupils should be intellectually and creatively challenged to think unconventionally and holistically in various fields of learning, including arts and performance, thereby broadening and enriching their experience of the school curriculum. This exciting approach can be seen as synonymous with the educational methodology of the Reddam House brand.
To understand how CHEX works practically, one can consider a case study such as that of Year 7 students learning about ‘cloud formations ’ in a Geography lesson. At the end of prep tasks, a CHEX challenge will be set to encourage deeper, critical thinking.
These would include tasks such as asking students to imagine what might happen to cloud formation in the age of global warming, and how this would that impact the water cycle. Supplementary displays encourage children to think deeply; continuing the Geography analogy; students add news stories to a world map every day, so its relevance is clear as it jumps off the textbook and into the world around them. In addition, students add news stories to a world map every day, so as to contextualise their world, and gain a broader understanding of global interconnectedness.
For parents, CHEX manifests itself in ideas to help extend learning and trips to enhance the curriculum. The challenges are based on discussion and exploration, rather than ‘more homework’ with an aim of developing a love of curiosity.
For assessment, CHEX encourages three-dimensional analysis that supplements and enriches general ability testing. Teachers complete a CHEX grid, mapping their perception of individual students’ efforts in every class which are analysed to provide insights on overall performance and improve these accordingly.
The TES award winners will be announced on February 8, 2018 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. For more information, visit: http://isawards.co.uk/independentschoolsawards2018/en/page/categories
